I assume most or all of you have received a mail message last night about the NAGCR possibly using PayPal or Google Wallet for paying NAGCR dues. As my question here is likely to be interest to other members, too, it seems appropriate to ask it here, rather than privately via email. I'll append the message that spurred this question to the end of this post.

The message states that if the NAGCR does allow paying dues electronically, it will charge an additional $1.00 fee for the privilege to partially offset costs. This surprises me. I've gone back and checked, and each of the last three payments I've made with PayPal to the SRCY have incurred charges of between 3 and 9 cents.

Why will it be so much higher for paying the NAGCR?

Here's the message that spurred this question:

Subject: NAGCR On-Line Payments Poll
To: (undisclosed recipients)
Dear Member (or Clapper Subscriber):
The Executive Committee of NAGCR has been looking into offering a way for members to pay for dues or subscriptions on-line. The concept is that we would have a link on our website that takes you to an e-commerce site where you can make your payment. There are costs that NAGCR would incur for each e-commerce transaction and the idea is to charge a flat per transaction “convenience fee” of $1.00 partially to offset these costs.
We have been looking at two providers of on-line payments; Google Wallet and PayPal. Both can link to our website and their fees are pretty much the same. To use whatever e-commerce site we decide to use, if you do not have an account with them you would have to open one in order to use the on-line payment facility. Opening an account in either Google Wallet or PayPal is relatively easy.
To help the Exec decide, we are asking only those who would use the on-line payment facility to answer a poll. The poll asks if you’d prefer to use Google Wallet, PayPal, would prefer either equally, or – if none of those three choices – some other e-commerce facility that you can name. If you don’t think you’d use on-line payment and would still like to pay the traditional way, then please don’t take the poll.
Here is the link to the poll: http://kwiksurveys.com/app/showpoll.asp?qid=82510&sid=21kgprr8o5xx2p482510&new=True
The poll will be available from now until February 15th. We’ll publish the results.
Thanks in advance for your participation.
