The weekend of 14-17 March twenty-two ringers gathered in Pittsburgh to attempt fistfuls of quarter peals. They came from Atlanta, Birmingham, Kalamazoo, Minneapolis/St Paul, New York, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Washington, DC. Twenty-three quarters were attempted, with eight different conductors. Of these, seventeen were successful, twelve in tower and five in hand. Two thirds were of surprise major, and the handbell quarters even ranged up to treble bob maximus.

Local ringer Nick Wells rang well in his first quarter inside, of Bob Doubles. Carolyn Ormes and Mike Hinton rang their first of Bristol; Rob Bannister and Rick DuPuy of London; Rob, Rick, Elaine Hansen, David Hawkins, Bill Kollar, Carolyn, Cally Perry and Kathryn Tucker of Cassiobury; Rob, Rick, Mike Harrison and David of Lessness; Lyn Barnett, Ted Clark, Rick, David, Mike Hinton and Kathryn of Johnnesburg; Lincolnshire and Superlative for Mike Hinton; first spliced for Mike Hinton and as conductor for Mike Harrison; and Kris Fowler, Elaine and Mike Schulte their first of Stedman in hand. A quarter of eleven spliced surprise major was the most methods for Kris, Meredith Morris, Mike Harrison and Margaret Miller.

Lots of other good practice, in the failed attempts as well as the successes, was had. Even when a quarter didn't go the band used it's allotted time to gain valuable experience.

Post ringing drinks, nibbles and yakking were at our usual haunts, though folks had so much studying to do, and mental energy to recover, that most called it a night surprisingly early each day. A new venue was tried for dinner together on Saturday, a large pan-Asian buffet, which seemed to work particularly well for hungry ringers, with diverse dietary needs, who were too hungry and tired to want to wait for a table. We'll be back, I reckon.
