Washington Cathedral Bells 50th Anniversary
May 23–26, 2014
May 7th will be the 50th anniversary of the dedication of Washington Cathedral’s Gloria in Excelsis Tower and peal bells. Washington Ringing Society will be celebrating this special anniversary over the Memorial Day weekend (May 23 – 26), and would love to have others join us.
Two peal attempts are scheduled at the Cathedral (Saturday and Monday – bands already set), and we’ll have general ringing at the Cathedral (some on simulator, some open) on Friday, Sunday, and Monday, as well as two quarter peal attempts (one, by Whitechapel Guild alumnae) on Sunday. We’ll also have a variety of ringing opportunities at the Old Post Office (your last chance before it closes for transformation into a luxury Trump Hotel!) and at Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick, MD.
In addition, on Saturday morning, we’re hoping to have a preservation talk and tour, some reminiscence about what it was like in 1964, and a carillon demo before the regular 12:30pm Saturday carillon concert. Saturday evening, we’re planning a dressy dinner for which people will be able to purchase tickets online after April 15th.
If you want to join us, please register (and purchase tickets for Saturday’s dinner) at http://bit.ly/wrs50 after April 15th. A small block of rooms will be held for us through April 26th at the Savoy Suites Hotel, about .6 mi from the Cathedral. Information about reserving one of these rooms at the special rate of $139/night will be on the website.
