Also known as The Five Towers Festival, this year's event is named "The Southern Cross Ringing Festival" in honor of Miss Marie Cross, whose instruction at towers in Texarkana, Little Rock and Houston created a lasting legacy in this region.
Hosted by alternating towers in the south central and southwest United States, affiliates include Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock, AR, First Presbyterian Church in Texarkana, AR, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston, and now St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Shreveport, LA. A new tower established in December, 2009, St. Mark’s has a ring of eight tower bells, 9-1-14, Whitechapel 2009.
The festival will include a ringing course April 28th and 29th and a belfry maintenance course Friday, April 29th/ The Ringing Course begins Thursday, April 28th at 9:00 a.m. and runs through noon on Friday, April 29th. Targeted to newer ringers, students may be divided into groups according to level of ringing. More details will be available after registration has closed and information is gathered about expected ringers. (Quarter peal attempts and opportunities for more advanced ringing will be available throughout the weekend.) Cost for the ringing course is $15 per person and is in addition to the festival fee. The course fee will cover snacks, drinks & breakfast items on Thursday & Friday and lunch on Thursday.
We are pleased to announce the belfry maintenance course will be taught by Alan Hughes of Whitechapel Bell Foundry Friday, April 29th. A classroom session will be conducted Friday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by a belfry session after lunch. There will be no fee for the maintenance course. Slots will be limited, so early registration is encouraged.
In keeping with tradition, Alan Regin will judge the annual ringing competition on Saturday, April 30th, followed by an evening dinner celebration where the winners are announced.
